Augtoberfest is a festival unlike any other worldwide. The spirit of Bavaria meets with the energy, whim, and immeasurable breadth of Alaska. Last year’s Augtoberfest brought Trampled by Turtles, and many more bands, to a weekend audience of 2,400. This year, August 1st and 2nd, at the 49th State Brewing Co the Reverend Horton Heat, 40oz. to Freedom (Sublime), The Past Haunts, The Avery Wolves, Young Fangs, and Alaska Blaskapelle are gracing the outdoor stage in the 49th’s expansive beer garden. Lederhosen, liter mugs, sauerkraut, and all the “oom pah pah” you can shake a stick at will be on hand.
Seeing REVEREND HORTON HEAT live is a transformative experience. Flames come off the guitars. Heat singes your skin. There’s nothing like the primal tribal rock & roll transfiguration of a Reverend Horton Heat show. Jim becomes a slicked-back 1950′s rock & roll shaman channeling Screamin’ Jay Hawkins through Buddy Holly, while Jimbo incinerates the Stand-Up Bass. It’s like being magically transported into a Teen Exploitation picture from the 1950′s that’s currently taking place in the future. Listening to the REVEREND HORTON HEAT is tantamount to injecting pure musical nitrous into the hot-rod engine of your heart. The Reverend’s commandments are simple: ROCK HARD, DRIVE FAST, AND LIVE TRUE.
Beer geeks will go ga-ga over the selection of beer at Augtoberfest. The 49th State Brewing Co is releasing their Oktoberfest and other specialty brews. Of note this year, the 49th’s Bullenerweisse (Berlinerweisse) is sure to appeal to the festival goers. This specialty beer was originally brewed as a thirst quencher for farmhands. It’s effervescence and underlying sour notes are guaranteed to perk a pallette or two. Geniessers (food lovers) will find a specialty menu at the brewery with authentic Bavarian cuisine. On Saturday, Alaska Blaskapelle will have the crowd shouting “Prost” and singing along with the traditional tunes of a Bavarian Oktoberfest.
“Augtoberfest at the 49th State Brewing Co is a blast. It should be required attendance for Alaskans.” -Gary Black, Features Editor, Fairbanks Daily News Miner
